Probiotics: A Guide to Beneficial Bacteria

Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits when consumed. But with so many strains available, which one is right for you?

  • Lactobacillus: Great for digestion and lactose intolerance.
  • Bifidobacterium: Supports the immune system.
  • Saccharomyces boulardii: A beneficial yeast that helps with diarrhea.

 

Probiotics are live, beneficial microorganisms—mostly bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium—that provide health benefits when consumed, primarily by aiding digestion, enhancing immunity, and restoring gut microbiome balance. Found in fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, kimchi) and supplements, they are often used to treat digestive issues, particularly after antibiotic use

 Live microorganisms, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. They consist mainly of bacteria (such as strains from the genera Bifidobacterium, Lacticaseibacillus and some yeasts (e.g., Saccharomyces boulardii). Not every product labelled “probiotic” has proven benefits—effects are highly strain-specific, meaning benefits observed with one strain (e.g., *Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus* GG, often called LGG) may not apply to others.

They transiently colonize the gut and interact with the existing microbiome (the community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc., in the body).

Research on Health Effects

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis — Certain strains or mixtures may improve symptoms, abdominal pain, or help induce/maintain remission in ulcerative colitis (moderate evidence from dozens of studies). Emerging research suggests possible benefits for intestinal barrier function,  and body composition, but results are inconsistent or preliminary. No strong support for obesity, cholesterol lowering, or cognitive outcomes in healthy people; probiotics do not reliably increase gut microbiota diversity in healthy adults. Prebiotics are non-living substances—typically certain types of dietary fibres—that serve as food for beneficial gut microbes, promoting their growth and activity while providing health advantages to the host.  Prebiotics differ from **probiotics**, which are live microorganisms. Prebiotics are indigestible by human enzymes (resistant to stomach acid and absorption in the small intestine), reach the colon intact, and are fermented by gut bacteria (especially *Bifidobacterium* and *Lactobacillus* species). Common prebiotics include:

– Fructo-oligosaccharides

– Inulin (often from chicory root)

– Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS)

– Other emerging ones like resistant starch, xylo-oligosaccharides, and pectin-derived compounds

They occur naturally in foods such as onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, bananas, chicory root, Jerusalem artichokes, whole grains, beans, and some fruits/vegetables. Prebiotics are also added to supplements, fortified foods, and functional products.

Synbiotics

**Synbiotics** combine probiotics (live microbes) and prebiotics (substrates). The current \definition is: “a mixture comprising live microorganisms and substrate(s) selectively utilized by host microorganisms that confers a health benefit on the host.”
